On the bright side getting a musty smell out of a carpet is relatively simple. Blow air between carpet and padding. The same cannot be said for wet padding especially in greywater floods. To do that pull up the carpeting wearing gloves to reach the padding.

You re going to want to try to dry the pad without removing the carpet especially if the pad seems to have only gotten a little damp and the subfloor seems dry. Prolonging the cleaning process will also result in the spread of damage possibly even causing the carpet to become irreplaceable.

Sprinkle a large amount of baking soda over the damp carpet. Steam cleaning wet carpet removes any toxins and deodorizes it. Carpet padding is essentially a giant sponge and can absorb all manner of bacteria and harmful substances from floodwater. Replace it to prevent the main carpet from becoming saturated with mold.

But what do i do about the wall. Water run down the wall in one corner of my finished basement. Then pull out the padding and dispose of it. It got wet with clean water not like a storm.

Let the baking soda sit on the carpet for several hours up to 24 hours to allow it ample time to soak up the remaining moisture and odor from the carpet. Especially if the area was flooded getting rid of the odor should be a walk in the park. Do i need to rip out the drywall that got wet. A dehumidifier in a closed room will pull out water fast and can be rented from rental companies.

Carpet padding is like a sponge and will absorb a lot of water but it will not dry out.
